The goal of enterprise architecture is to assemble the components, including all of their characteristics and relationships, into a functioning whole, so that the enterprise goals are optimally supported, duplications are avoided, and cooperation is simplified. This is achieved in part by providing and applying generally recognised standards.
The FITSU promotes architecture development at two levels:
Enterprise architecture development in the Federal Administration is carried out according to a federated approach by the FITSU, the departments, the federal offices and service providers. The FITSU

Federal ICT standards
The Federal IT Council (FITC) issues ICT standards applicable to the entire Federal Administration. Where it makes sense to do so, eCH standards are adopted by the Federal Administration.

Within the eGovernment environment, the FITSU directs the eGovernment Architecture Switzerland project. The eGovernment Architecture treats the authorities in Switzerland as a large system that provides services to citizens and enterprises. The project promotes the networking of eGovernment architects and designs architecture models, methods and aids to support implementation of the eGovernment Strategy Switzerland.
